October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a time to educate, empower, and encourage proactive steps toward breast health. While advancements in detection and treatment continue to improve survival rates, early detection remains one of the most powerful tools we have.
Here are a few ways to stay proactive:
- Know Your Normal
Get familiar with how your breasts look and feel. Perform regular self-checks to notice any changes – such as lumps, dimpling, discharge, or pain – and report them to your healthcare provider right away. Awareness begins with you. - Schedule Regular Screenings
Mammograms can detect cancer before it is felt. Women at average risk should begin annual or biennial mammograms at age 40-45, but talk with your doctor about what is right for you based on your personal and family health history. - Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, limit alcohol, and avoid smoking. These healthy habits not only improve overall well-being, but also can help lower your cancer risk. - Know Your Family History
Genetics can play a role. If breast cancer runs in your family, your doctor may recommend earlier or more frequent screenings or genetic counseling. - Support and Spread Awareness
Wear pink, participate in community walks, or share educational resources. Small gestures create big waves of awareness and support for those affected by breast cancer.
This month and every month make your health a priority. Taking time for preventative care and awareness today can make all the difference tomorrow.
