Hydration 101

How much water should you be drinking every day? How much is enough to stay hydrated? How important is hydration for your body? If I exercise, should I be drinking more than my daily goal? I don’t like the plain taste of water, what else can I drink to stay hydrated?

Well look no further! Here we will answer your hydration questions and share some alternatives to water that will help you stay hydrated and improve your health.

Why is hydration important?

Did you know that you can live without food for about three weeks, but you cannot live without water for more than three days?

This is because at least 60% of the adult body is made of water, and every living cell needs it to keep functioning. By drinking water, it helps the body:

  • Regulate body temperature
  • Keep joints lubricated
  • Prevent infection
  • Deliver nutrients to cells
  • Keep organs functioning properly
  • Improve sleep
  • Assist in losing weight
  • Carrying toxins out of the blood strea

How much water do we need?

Approximately eight cups of water per day is the average amount of water needed for an adult. (However, the right amount of water you need to stay hydrated can vary depending on the person.) But not all eight cups need to come from plain water. See below for more examples of how to get your water intake without drinking plain water.

Remember when using alternative sources to hydrate, it is best to stay away from too much artificial ingredients and sugar-sweetened drinks because that can do more harm than good. Too much sugar can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
