Program Director’s Message
Welcome Letter from Anesthesiology Residency Program Director:
The Department of Anesthesiology welcomes your interest in our residency program.
In July 2024, a categorical anesthesia residency training program was approved for 24 residency spots (6 residents a year). We have filled our first two classes in July of 2024 and are looking for the next batch of 6 successful applicants to join us in July 2025. In the cycle afterwards, we will have our full complement of 24 residents.
Even though under the aegis of New York Medical College’s Graduate Medical Education office, we are based in New Jersey. The training of residents is balanced between 5 different sites, St. Mary’s General Hospital in Passaic, NJ, and Saint Clare’s Health in Denville and Dover, NJ, Nemours Children Hospital in Delaware, and Westchester Medical Center.
St. Mary’s General Hospital is located just ten miles from Manhattan, in an urban setting, where medical residents encounter many patients who often lack regular access to primary care and may face challenges related to insurance coverage. Such lack of primary care implies that these patients present to the hospital sicker and often in extremis creating unique challenges in their medical anesthetic care.
The location of the residency in this part of the country allows for many options for sport fans with multiple professional teams playing in the basketball, football, hockey, soccer, and baseball; entertainment aficionados have access to Broadway, travel buffs have access to the world via Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia airports. Many Amtrak connections can be used to run up and down the east coast of the USA. Outdoor enthusiasts have many options involving hills for hiking and plenty of choices like fishing and sailing in the water-based options.
Our residency program will teach appropriate levels of clinical care, essential teamwork, necessary leadership skills and humanism of patient centered care. It is both an honor and a privilege to take care of patients in their most dire, scary, and life-changing situations. We honor our patient’s privacy and encourage shared decision making in all aspects of clinical care.
We hope to be part of your journey from medical student to anesthesiology colleague. We wish you the best in this transformative part of your professional journey.
Please reach out to me with any questions or comments.
